General Education for Non-Degree Completers
Overview
- All bachelor’s degrees at ECU require the completion of the General Education Program.
- Completion of ECU’s General Education program is not required in order to transfer.
- North Carolina Community College students completing an Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Arts Teacher Preparation (AATP), Associate in Science (AS), or Associate in Science Teacher Preparation (ASTP) earn a General Education waiver upon transfer and proof of degree.
- NCCCS students completing an Associate in Fine Arts, Associate in Engineering, or Associate in Applied Science do not automatically earn a General Education waiver upon transfer.
- NCCCS students who decide to transfer without completing an AA, AATP, AS, or ASTP, or those pursuing an AFA, AE, or AAS, may use this guide to choose courses for transfer.
- Note: If you are a NCCCS student, please use the these equivalency lists in consult with your NC community college advisor and collaboration with the appropriate ECU Advising Center.

General Education Requirements
ECU’s General Education program includes 40 hours of general education courses, broken into competencies:
- Written Communication
- Humanities and Fine Arts
- Social Sciences
- Mathematics
- Natural Sciences
- Health Promotion and Health-Related Physical Activity
Written Communication
- The Written Communication competency requires 6 credit hours, consisting of ENGL 1100 and ENGL 2201.
- The community college equivalencies for these courses are ENG 111 and ENG 112.
Humanities and Fine Arts
- The Humanities and Fine Arts competencies require 9 credit hours consisting of the following:
- one humanities course
- one fine arts course
- an additional humanities or fine arts course

Health Promotion and Health-Related Physical Activity
- The Health Promotion and Health-Related Physical Activity competencies require a total of 3 credit hours, one course from each area.
- If you are not eligible for a General Education Waiver, it is beneficial to choose HEA 110 as a course at your community college.
